This year I would buy a car. This year I will take care of my health. This year I will be ever-present in my family members’ lives. I would love to see the childhood growth of my children. This year…… every new year we have all these great resolutions. With the mainstream media, hyping and promoting the new year as a time for everyone to start their life afresh.
Turn on the TV and that the time you hear every motivation speaker from Njoroge to Atieno or even Musyoka. Some of us even turn to international motivation speakers, telling us this will be our year. I remember at the beginning of the year 2020 one Akamba Musician realized a song of how it will be her and her followers’ year of success. You know how 2020 was.. . Every encouragement you see is about How we are going to move from the ordinary to the extra-ordinary, their speeches are based on how we are going to recognize our hidden potential and discover genuine success this year.
Every January we go out to buy diaries, we write goals, objectives and things we want to achieve that year. We make ourselves promises we will not sleep until we achieve our goals. We pay for the gym membership. We apply for that degree program we are most passionate about, and this is always the time of the year we are on top of our game. Most of us set wishful task and hope by a stroke of magic we are going to achieve it.
But after three months we get tired, We find reasons and excuses why we should not continue doing what we are doing. We get some fault to go back to our comfort zone because this current one is tiresome and wastes lots of our time. Most of us forget that we need to experience this struggle of moving through our cocoon to grow into a butterfly. And it is through this tiresome time and struggles that we find opportunities like the caterpillar to grow wings and fly. So instead of finding reasons to continue doing our new year’s resolutions, we find reasons why we should go back to our unhealthy lifestyle.
We fall back to our unhealthy ways because it is easier to say that you gave us rather than continuing with your goals and if you find you are having a problem in being consistency, then the issue is not your goals it is your system.
But let this year be different, let this year be the year you nurture your potential. Purpose to sojourn on to the end. Yes, there will be times where you’ll feel exhausted and all you want is to quit, but for your sake and yours alone, please don’t!.
Wake up daily by giving yourself strength, because if you don’t no one will. If you don’t get up and show up for you, no one else will.
A happy new year and let’s be better.
Peace.
